The quartet members are Walter Levine and Henry Meyer of violins Peter chemists

are Viola and Jack Kirsteen cello. Later in the

program we are to hear the quartet in a minor Opus 132

by Beethoven. Born in Budapest in
[00:48 - 00:53]
1905 my chess Scheiber studied composition was all time
[00:53 - 00:57]
Corday at the Hungarian Academy of Music. Upon completion of his studies in one
[00:57 - 01:02]
thousand twenty five he spent a few years traveling to the United States Central and
[01:02 - 01:07]
South America and subsequently was appointed professor at the Conservatory of Music
[01:07 - 01:12]
in Frankfurt from 1935 on Mr Scheiber lived in
[01:12 - 01:17]
London. Teaching composition and conducting his own works in
[01:17 - 01:22]
1960 while on a visit to South Africa. SCHEIBER died in an
[01:22 - 01:26]
automobile accident. A second quartet was written in
[01:26 - 01:30]
1934 35 and consists of three movements
[01:30 - 01:35]
the form of the first two movements is modeled on classical prototypes the
[01:35 - 01:40]
first sonata allegro the second untitled and remet so
[01:40 - 01:45]
corresponding to the stylized dance of the classical period is here based on a dance of
[01:45 - 01:50]
the 20th century the blues. The third movement is a telescope
[01:50 - 01:54]
version of slow movement and finale in a complex Rondo
[01:54 - 01:59]
design. The whole work is based on a single 12 tone row
[01:59 - 02:04]
used with considerable freedom. We hear the quartet number
[02:04 - 02:09]

Beethoven's 15th quartet one of the last five works in his life
[23:03 - 23:08]
was composed in 18 25 as a commissioned for Prince gullet scene
[23:08 - 23:14]
who had offered him fifty Duckett's for remuneration which did not arrive until a composer had
[23:14 - 23:19]
been dead for some time. By 18 25 Beethoven had become
[23:19 - 23:23]
a virtual recluse and misanthrope due to his deafness inescapable
[23:23 - 23:28]
loneliness and constant illness a new attack of abdominal element
[23:28 - 23:33]
in the spring of 1825 explains the heading of the slow movement song of
[23:33 - 23:37]
Thanksgiving offered to the Deity by a convalescent in the
[23:37 - 23:42]
Lydian Mode followed by two later sections headed feeling
[23:42 - 23:47]
new strength. Beethoven had become considerably interested in the works of
[23:47 - 23:51]
Palestrina during his last years and for this movement adopted one of the ancient church
[23:51 - 23:56]
modes Lydian throughout the quartet. One is struck by
[23:56 - 24:01]
some of the extremely dissonant passages which come about through the rugged
[24:01 - 24:07]
individualism of the four instruments in the pursuit of their course.
