Here now is Mr. Kenneth bird.

The last time I spoke to you all in this series was about two in the
[00:43 - 00:48]
home a few years ago. I then spoke to you from New
[00:48 - 00:53]
York. But this time I am at home in London within the sound of Big
[00:53 - 00:57]
Ben which you've just heard and which I've listened to for 17
[00:57 - 01:01]
years in the editorial office a bunch
[01:01 - 01:04]
this time.
[01:04 - 01:08]
I should like to talk for a few minutes on the subject of humor.
[01:08 - 01:16]
Now this is supposed to be the age of the specialist.
[01:16 - 01:20]
There's a sort of idea that the sum total of human knowledge is growing
[01:20 - 01:24]
so rapidly that only a specialist can cope with it
[01:24 - 01:30]
and the ordinary man has got to content himself with knowing more and
[01:30 - 01:35]
more about less and less. Now as a matter of fact
[01:35 - 01:40]
of course whenever a new bit of knowledge is added It
[01:40 - 01:45]
must take the place of an old bit of knowledge which it
[01:45 - 01:50]
proves to be wrong. And so really it isn't the sum
[01:50 - 01:54]
total of human knowledge increases. It's the sum total
[01:54 - 01:59]
of human specialists. Humor of course
[01:59 - 02:04]
has suffered from this tyranny of the specialist like everything else
[02:04 - 02:10]
a tradition has been built up that only a specialist is
[02:10 - 02:15]
competent to study humor at all and that even a specialist
[02:15 - 02:20]
couldn't explain it in words that an ordinary man could understand
[02:20 - 02:26]
the ordinary man is still allowed to laugh at things of course but he
[02:26 - 02:30]
must not try to understand why he laughs at them.
[02:30 - 02:36]
Now personally I'm not a specialist.
[02:36 - 02:41]
I'm not a trained psychologist. I just make my living out of it.
[02:41 - 02:46]
And so there's nothing to stop me telling you that I think
[02:46 - 02:51]
that humor is much simpler and much easier to understand
[02:51 - 02:55]
than it's always made out to be.
[02:55 - 03:00]
I don't believe that the sense of humor is some mysterious or
[03:00 - 03:05]
superior sense that one man possesses and another one thinks
[03:05 - 03:10]
he's got and hasn't. I think everyone's got one.
[03:10 - 03:14]
Even if he doesn't always let himself use it and I
[03:14 - 03:19]
don't believe I thought that humor is intended to be used
[03:19 - 03:24]
only in lighter moments something something to be stuck on like
[03:24 - 03:29]
a false nose. If human is going to be any use it
[03:29 - 03:34]
must be most use when we need it most and not when we
[03:34 - 03:35]
need it least.
[03:35 - 03:41]
Tragedy isn't higher and finer and more respectable than
[03:41 - 03:46]
comedy. Well it certainly seems to sell the newspapers better
[03:46 - 03:51]
but that isn't because it's higher and finer and more respectable
[03:51 - 03:57]
and it isn't higher and finer to cry than it is to love.
[03:57 - 04:02]
In fact I'm quite sure myself that Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew
[04:02 - 04:07]
has saved more wives from being smothered by their husbands than ever
[04:07 - 04:12]
of yellow hairs. Then again I don't believe that
[04:12 - 04:15]
humor must always contain cruelty
[04:15 - 04:22]
humor is essentially humane and kindly and it
[04:22 - 04:27]
helps and all to help to unite us all together.
[04:27 - 04:32]
And if it's cruel then I don't believe it's human. People
[04:32 - 04:37]
don't laugh at other people's misfortunes not just because their
[04:37 - 04:42]
misfortunes. It just isn't twice as funny to fall out of a
[04:42 - 04:47]
window on the 10th floor than it is to fall out of one on the fifth.
[04:47 - 04:53]
It isn't really anything funny about falling over a banana skin.
[04:53 - 04:58]
Not even if you break an egg in the process. But I know this
[04:58 - 05:03]
is the point. If you fall over a button on the skin while
[05:03 - 05:07]
wanting your wife to look very very carefully then it is
[05:07 - 05:12]
funny. That is to say it isn't the furling over the banal on a
[05:12 - 05:19]
scale that we laugh at but the behavior that led up to it.
[05:19 - 05:24]
The business of humor in fact is to act as a kindly
[05:24 - 05:30]
corrective kindly corrective of ridiculous behavior.
[05:30 - 05:35]
We all agree that people oughtn't to fork over banana
[05:35 - 05:39]
skins especially on the crowded sidewalk. If they
[05:39 - 05:44]
do they get down in among other people's feet and they make a general
[05:44 - 05:49]
nuisance of themselves and so however many banana skins may
[05:49 - 05:54]
be lying on the sidewalk. All of us should pick our
[05:54 - 05:59]
way very carefully between them. Now it's
[05:59 - 06:03]
hardly practical or even fair to put people in
[06:03 - 06:07]
prison for falling over banana skins.
[06:07 - 06:12]
And so it is that humans greater force of ridicule
[06:12 - 06:17]
which happens to be one of the strongest attendance. For
[06:17 - 06:22]
all its gentleness is used instead and
[06:22 - 06:26]
so humor is a sort of kindly policeman keeping an eye on the
[06:26 - 06:31]
ridiculousness is of human behavior and that is probably
[06:31 - 06:36]
why it's so widely thought to be a national characteristic
[06:36 - 06:42]
with a different brand for every country. The
[06:42 - 06:47]
real fact is of course that human behavior which is
[06:47 - 06:52]
human as raw material is the same in every country.
[06:52 - 06:57]
But of course it's influenced by the country's position and its climate
[06:57 - 07:02]
by its politics by fashion and a host of other things so
[07:02 - 07:06]
that while Hillmer itself is the same everywhere
[07:06 - 07:13]
its expression varies from place to place and from time
[07:13 - 07:18]
to time a central African laughs at a man in a fur
[07:18 - 07:23]
coat and an Eskimo laughs. But a man without one.
[07:23 - 07:28]
Now each of them thinks that the other's got no sense of humor. But all the time
[07:28 - 07:30]
they're really laughing at the same joke.
[07:30 - 07:37]
Now there are many people who seem to make a habit and even
[07:37 - 07:41]
a minute of being unable to understand the humor of another
[07:41 - 07:43]
nation.
[07:43 - 07:48]
With most nations of course it doesn't matter very much because
[07:48 - 07:53]
if one doesn't understand a man's language well one can't possibly
[07:53 - 07:58]
know if one understands his humor or not. But it
[07:58 - 08:03]
is important as between the citizens of the United States
[08:03 - 08:08]
and of Great Britain who do understand each other's language well
[08:08 - 08:12]
enough and see each other's periodicals and newspapers
[08:12 - 08:17]
but they both seem very often to take a strange pride
[08:17 - 08:23]
in failing to understand the other's humor and in consequence
[08:23 - 08:27]
in presuming that they haven't got any. Now this
[08:27 - 08:32]
inability to understand each other's humor can be
[08:32 - 08:37]
absolutely genuine and real. But because it's
[08:37 - 08:41]
hardly ever spread evenly over all forms of humor
[08:41 - 08:47]
for the same people who complain that they can't understand the humor
[08:47 - 08:52]
in the other nation's periodicals and newspapers will quite
[08:52 - 08:57]
frequently enjoy the humor in the other nations plays and movies and
[08:57 - 09:01]
radio and the human of plays and movie and
[09:01 - 09:06]
radio. The only difference from that of the printed
[09:06 - 09:11]
page in that it goes very much quicker. And it gives one no
[09:11 - 09:15]
chance to think about it and so it really ought to be
[09:15 - 09:19]
very much less understandable and not more.
[09:19 - 09:25]
Genuine misunderstanding of one another's humor
[09:25 - 09:31]
usually arises from ignorance of the conditions dealt with.
[09:31 - 09:36]
All of the terms employed on something like that the subject that's
[09:36 - 09:40]
treated may be too topical or too local for the
[09:40 - 09:45]
stranger to know about it. The man in Boston may be
[09:45 - 09:49]
just as much at a loss to understand a New York joke
[09:49 - 09:55]
as the man in London the Bostonian
[09:55 - 09:59]
However presumes perfectly correctly that the subject is
[09:59 - 10:04]
purely New York and that it probably refers to some new
[10:04 - 10:09]
subway regulation or something that he hasn't heard of.
[10:09 - 10:14]
But the Londoner is convinced that it is because there is some
[10:14 - 10:20]
great gulf fixed but tween American humor and British.
[10:20 - 10:24]
This is a great pity because it results in
[10:24 - 10:29]
considerable loss on both sides. For if one
[10:29 - 10:34]
doesn't expect to understand the joke one probably won't understand it
[10:34 - 10:38]
anyway. Or if one does understand it one will
[10:38 - 10:43]
understand it so grudgingly and with so many
[10:43 - 10:47]
reservations that the point will be lost anyhow.
[10:47 - 10:55]
Well. Well so far we've only talked about humor
[10:55 - 11:00]
as a Connector of the ridiculous as a kind of a corrective
[11:00 - 11:07]
as a kindly policeman in fact. But of course that isn't all
[11:07 - 11:11]
of it. If that one human only job
[11:11 - 11:16]
then as we all get more perfect there will be
[11:16 - 11:19]
less and less ridiculousness to laugh at
[11:19 - 11:26]
until finally when we get to heaven and there's
[11:26 - 11:31]
no ridiculousness to laugh at at all no one will be
[11:31 - 11:36]
laughing. And that really would be about as funny as anything.
[11:36 - 11:41]
And so the sense of humor can't be only corrective.
[11:41 - 11:48]
I think really it's very like other senses except that its roots go
[11:48 - 11:52]
deep and its branches go higher. The man but the
[11:52 - 11:58]
finest sense of taste isn't the man who knows most about bad food.
[11:58 - 12:03]
He's the man who knows most about good food and in consequence can avoid
[12:03 - 12:07]
bad food. The man of the finest sense of smell isn't a man who
[12:07 - 12:12]
knows most about bad smells. He's the man who knows most about good
[12:12 - 12:17]
smells and can appreciate them and in consequence if you
[12:17 - 12:22]
like can't avoid bad smells. The job of the census is to
[12:22 - 12:27]
let us enjoy the best as well as avoid the West.
[12:27 - 12:31]
And I think it's the same with the sense of humor I think.
[12:31 - 12:37]
That the sense of humor is the sense by which we
[12:37 - 12:42]
enjoy the sublime and avoid the ridiculous. In fact it's
[12:42 - 12:46]
the sense by which we enjoy the sublime and in consequence avoid the
[12:46 - 12:48]
ridiculous.
[12:48 - 12:53]
I think humans rather like the song of birds at its
[12:53 - 12:58]
lowest and most utilitarian. It's like the harsh questioning and
[12:58 - 13:02]
honking of the bird on the shoal who makes a loud noise
[13:02 - 13:08]
just to tell his friends where he is and what sort of a time he's having.
[13:08 - 13:13]
And we all know that sort of humorist although it hasn't got much to do with the point.
[13:13 - 13:18]
Then when humor gets a little higher I think it's like the song of the
[13:18 - 13:23]
bird of the woods who sings pop into charm his mate and
[13:23 - 13:28]
partly because he enjoys singing. Until at its
[13:28 - 13:32]
highest I think it's just an expression of Shia joy in
[13:32 - 13:37]
itself. It's like this some of them. Which
[13:37 - 13:42]
for no apparently useful purpose Rices plan and hide
[13:42 - 13:48]
until it finally goes right out of sight somewhere.
[13:48 - 13:52]
Well. As the Book of Job says the morning stars sing
[13:52 - 13:56]
together and all the sons of God shout for joy
[13:56 - 14:02]
which is just about as good a description I think of the loft of
[14:02 - 14:08]
sheer delight as anyone could see.
[14:08 - 14:13]
