Congress of Racial Equality Dr. Ralph Abernathy of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

And Roy Wilkins of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Today's
[00:43 - 00:48]
program the black color line for perspectives on race.

Questions asked in the following program are merely the moderator's method of presenting many sides of

today's topic. Here is your host Joseph R.. Nader.

Historians tell us that since slavery times black people have been given the
[01:08 - 01:12]
short end of the stick. And since slavery times blacks have wondered why
[01:12 - 01:17]
asking themselves they obvious question. Is it because I'm blunt.
[01:17 - 01:22]
The answer is generally come back. Yes it is because I'm black. A
[01:22 - 01:27]
whispered Yes at first but an answer that in recent years has come to be shouted loud
[01:27 - 01:32]
and clear as black Americans have apparently concluded that though color was the
[01:32 - 01:36]
great measuring stick of the past it cannot be an acceptable means of measuring a
[01:36 - 01:41]
man's worth in the future. On this program you are about to hear four
[01:41 - 01:46]
black men talk about what it's like to be black in 20th century America.
[01:46 - 01:51]
They propose changes in America and they hope America will take concrete positive
[01:51 - 01:56]
decisive action to solve its race problem myself.
[01:56 - 02:01]
Brothers on stage with me. We represent but not called
[02:01 - 02:03]
America's problem.
[02:03 - 02:07]
Is not a problem this particular two Methodist deacons
[02:07 - 02:12]
Baptist preaches or the so-called young militants.
[02:12 - 02:18]
It's a problem of a whole race. A whole group of people.
[02:18 - 02:22]
Social commentators tell us that black Americans are second class citizens
[02:22 - 02:27]
in housing food jobs and education. The question is why
[02:27 - 02:32]
do these commentators make such sweeping generalizations. Perhaps the answer is
[02:32 - 02:37]
because blacks are the only minority group that has come to this country against its own will.
[02:37 - 02:42]
Unlike their fellow citizens who exchanged a life of oppression in Europe for a life
[02:42 - 02:47]
of freedom in America slave ships carried blocks from a life of freedom and
[02:47 - 02:52]
dignity in Africa to a life of degradation. In America they out for all
[02:52 - 02:57]
Americans history is exactly the reverse of most minority groups who have successfully
[02:57 - 03:01]
made it in America because no other minority group was involved in the
[03:01 - 03:06]
plantation slavery system. At this particular point in their history
[03:06 - 03:11]
black Americans are determined to speak out and tell what it feels like to be black in
[03:11 - 03:13]
20th century America.
[03:13 - 03:20]
It's not the moles in the world problem you know that is the biggest problem
[03:20 - 03:25]
this list of black people black pride the leaders of
[03:25 - 03:30]
Rome here wonder how races the Greeks are against us.
[03:30 - 03:34]
So call powerlessness is the problem that
[03:34 - 03:40]
we understand and the only thing that's held this country together this
[03:40 - 03:45]
and help black people down as long as the rampant racism. And
[03:45 - 03:51]
racism as a tenant that was used. Since the days of reconstruction.
[03:51 - 03:56]
Was bad and what the Klan were the first fascist in the history of the world. We don't
[03:56 - 03:56]
let.
[03:56 - 04:01]
The fact. Southern Christian Leadership Conference and we are working every
[04:01 - 04:07]
day against it. That this nation can spin.
[04:07 - 04:12]
25 or 30 billion dollars to put a man on the moon
[04:12 - 04:17]
and yet not spend $54 to stand a man known to
[04:17 - 04:21]
speak right here in Boston Massachusetts.
[04:21 - 04:29]
Most black people in this room are very familiar with unemployment low paying jobs high
[04:29 - 04:34]
taxes high cost of living. Evils of the society.
[04:34 - 04:39]
Most important of all are something we have not done honestly and consciously.
[04:39 - 04:44]
To recognize that we are two distinct people. Sharing the same
[04:44 - 04:49]
approximate piece of geography. Segregated.
[04:49 - 04:55]
On equal. Because segregation is a condition where any.
[04:55 - 05:00]
Two factions of society one dominating the other. One controlling the flow of goods
[05:00 - 05:02]
and services.
[05:02 - 05:07]
And controlling the institutions and not only their own area but in the area
[05:07 - 05:09]
of the other people.
[05:09 - 05:14]
But the reason that you have the speakers here before you tonight. Is because we've got a problem and that problem
[05:14 - 05:18]
is class survival. One thing about America is it has
[05:18 - 05:23]
become so all day to day so much the norm in America that you sort of used
[05:23 - 05:28]
to sit down Lester down and cut it up. We sit down and we talk about it. Take your foot off our neck
[05:28 - 05:33]
please. And. Come in here and you clap
[05:33 - 05:37]
pause. Give us some donations. So we're right on we're doing we're struggling against racism
[05:37 - 05:41]
and saying racism is a genocide. We have.
[05:41 - 05:47]
A very critical situation. In the United States at this
[05:47 - 05:52]
moment. For black people. We are seeing what could be
[05:52 - 05:57]
possibly the first phase.
[05:57 - 06:03]
Of what might become a genocidal campaign against black people.
[06:03 - 06:08]
It is at this moment. Directed. And it seems to be a national
[06:08 - 06:13]
conspiracy. Against the Black Panther Party.
[06:13 - 06:18]
Some of those thing to political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.
[06:18 - 06:23]
Some of the some of us think that it's very necessary. That everybody
[06:23 - 06:28]
respect the human rights that everyone has to defend themselves. But in
[06:28 - 06:34]
America if you defend yourself when you're not part of the system then you become. The criminal.
[06:34 - 06:37]
The real criminal makes yourself look like the victim of an unprovoked attack.
[06:37 - 06:44]
I think it would be shortsighted. If one moment. We fail to
[06:44 - 06:49]
heed. The handwriting on the wall of. The clear.
[06:49 - 06:54]
Handwriting that say's in less than two years 28 pandas kill.
[06:54 - 07:00]
40 of their leaders arrested. A hundred of their members at least in jail.
[07:00 - 07:04]
For sending to the Black Panther Party is not new. We want to bomb
[07:04 - 07:10]
the stage can tell you is solving the problem through genocide.
[07:10 - 07:13]

When it. Comes against Baptist machine guns against parents. That's how America

solve the problem.

I must admit I'd rather be in Los Angeles or Chicago or anyplace pencils or catching
[07:35 - 07:40]
hell right now. Because Panthers talk in any number of black people
[07:40 - 07:45]
dressed ourselves to what's meaningful to the black man who may not have a college degree
[07:45 - 07:50]
and don't know the U.N. from a frog but he knows a racist
[07:50 - 07:55]
fascist pig cop when he sees one. He knows hunger you know his unemployment.
[07:55 - 08:00]
Is what I call the American syndrome. It is I don't want
[08:00 - 08:05]
to recognize that which I don't like. Itis.
[08:05 - 08:10]
A very serious disease. This is the cause the
[08:10 - 08:14]
Americans. Not to recognize. Those many millions of Russians
[08:14 - 08:19]
after 1917 after the revolution. The same thing is true
[08:19 - 08:22]
of the Nationalists today.
[08:22 - 08:27]
The problems with the students the black students have here with their fellow students with the
[08:27 - 08:32]
administration is not something separate totally divorced from the black
[08:32 - 08:33]
community.
[08:33 - 08:38]
There's a relationship. Relationship is the same
[08:38 - 08:45]
as that relationship between a Baptist church machine gun and shot up in Detroit.
[08:45 - 08:50]
In a patent office or the home machine gun is shot up in
[08:50 - 08:56]
Chicago Los Angeles New York Seattle.
[08:56 - 09:00]
So we tried we tried.
[09:00 - 09:04]
English Southern negro. Arabic
[09:04 - 09:09]
Swahili. We do in rock
[09:09 - 09:15]
music. We sang the blues. We cry ballads it was the voice of a
[09:15 - 09:20]
people granted to a country that has never yet heard that voice.
[09:20 - 09:24]
It's been going on for 400 years.
[09:24 - 09:29]
The repression has been meted out to black people in this country is the basis of a song me was the
[09:29 - 09:34]
basis for Sand Creek. Was a basis for massacre and mass slaughter
[09:34 - 09:40]
and mass murder throughout the history of this country. If we can do it than it is
[09:40 - 09:45]
right here in chains don't stand a chance. That's data to.

Have an address. Niggas have no rises to respect I was a Supreme Court
[09:50 - 09:55]
1857 and it still holds true today. The courts give us no justice.

Years ago.

When John F. Kennedy. And then it was Robert
[10:04 - 10:06]
Francis Kennedy.
[10:06 - 10:11]
And now almost two years ago it was Martin Luther King Jr.
[10:11 - 10:16]
and a few days ago it was up Panther brothers over in Chicago
[10:16 - 10:21]
and tomorrow it may be me you i.e. anybody.
[10:21 - 10:27]
Yeah I anybody out.
[10:27 - 10:32]
There I want to make it clear that black people understand what's happening to them.
[10:32 - 10:37]
The conditions of battle with America present a unique problem.
[10:37 - 10:42]
And of soul will require unique solutions. We have to assume that. The
[10:42 - 10:45]
final solution will be in the interest of both people black and white.
[10:45 - 10:51]
Also most assume that there is a solution to this problem that might be more or less
[10:51 - 10:57]
mutually satisfactory to both sides. In order to address this problem.
[10:57 - 11:02]
We must look to social political and economic factors.
[11:02 - 11:06]
And then we can isolate any one of them.
[11:06 - 11:10]
Newspapers and magazines radio and TV all of
[11:10 - 11:15]
devoted much time to discussing solutions to the nation's racial problem
[11:15 - 11:20]
in front of our microphones Roy Innis of corps out of Messiah are here what of the
[11:20 - 11:25]
Black Panther Party express their solutions to our race dilemma. Roy
[11:25 - 11:30]
speaks of the liberation movement and a messiah who talks about taking the United States
[11:30 - 11:34]
government before the United Nations World Court.
[11:34 - 11:40]
It is a movement to liberate black people. From white domination.
[11:40 - 11:45]
Outside of the American system. We do not seek to reform it. We
[11:45 - 11:50]
do not seek to have a revolution in it. In fact every revolution
[11:50 - 11:54]
should come for us. It will come after we liberated.
[11:54 - 11:59]
The Black Panther Party's intention. To do what a lot of brothers.
[11:59 - 12:04]
Southern Christian Leadership Conference the end of Lucy P. now come in the organization of
[12:04 - 12:09]
Afro-American Unity that used to exist talked about. Us to take this government your
[12:09 - 12:14]
government which you have passed. Charge it before the United Nations with
[12:14 - 12:19]
genocide against the people. We don't think that we have to wait until the genocide is
[12:19 - 12:23]
defined by 99 percent of his being his Think like the Indians or the buffaloes.
[12:23 - 12:28]
The solution of the nationalists the solution of liberation. Has never really been considered
[12:28 - 12:34]
a test. Or even understood for a fact. Let me for a while.
[12:34 - 12:39]
Discuss some observations about the condition of black people in America. First of
[12:39 - 12:44]
all we exist in the heterogeneous relationship. I have is that two
[12:44 - 12:50]
groups two class factions. With different interests.
[12:50 - 12:54]
We live. Our lives through a graphically a pot. We number over
[12:54 - 12:57]
25 million.
[12:57 - 13:01]
That's more people than many independent nations. That's where. We have a
[13:01 - 13:06]
productivity measured by the gross national product. Of all
[13:06 - 13:11]
140 billion dollars. Which is more productivity than most in the pendent
[13:11 - 13:12]
nations.
[13:12 - 13:17]
Now it is these kinds of observations. That lead me and the
[13:17 - 13:22]
nationalists to assume that we are in fact and they should be. And in terms of
[13:22 - 13:26]
coming in the United States. And we must do that as a program where
[13:26 - 13:32]
people live in the colonial state do. They must sue for independence.
[13:32 - 13:37]
They want to liberate themselves. The monks say they will liberate themselves
[13:37 - 13:38]
by any means possible.
[13:38 - 13:44]
But we understand that our struggle has got to go on a level to a world court because
[13:44 - 13:49]
we're not going to let the people who perpetrated the oppression upon us
[13:49 - 13:51]
stand judge of themselves.
[13:51 - 13:58]
We don't think America can do it with an immediate and immediate program.
[13:58 - 14:02]
We constructed. And pushed.
[14:02 - 14:07]
A bill called the Community self-determination bill. That
[14:07 - 14:12]
would have set up and clap communities for the first time. A
[14:12 - 14:16]
central line instrument. That had both political and economic
[14:16 - 14:22]
functions. That could bring a greater degree of unity to our communities.
[14:22 - 14:27]
But the force the federal government to deal directly with us instead of through
[14:27 - 14:32]
a pane of attention like the cities or the state. That couldn't find
[14:32 - 14:37]
the very necessary step. That was breaking out of the lemon we exist in.
[14:37 - 14:42]
The immediate program. Is a move to gain. And
[14:42 - 14:47]
create. Political units to convert the rods barriers
[14:47 - 14:52]
and the Bostons into. Cities. On par with the Boston
[14:52 - 14:57]
the Harlem's and possibly New York City's The Watts and Pa with Los
[14:57 - 15:02]
Angeles. That's such a couple of the time the most political unit and
[15:02 - 15:07]
