presents a series of talks drawn from the institute's annual conference held recently

in Rensselaer Vale New York. The Institute on man and science
[00:20 - 00:24]
is a nonprofit educational institution chartered by the New York State Board of
[00:24 - 00:29]
Regents. The annual assembly of the institute is designed to focus
[00:29 - 00:34]
attention on 20th century technology and human relationships resulting
[00:34 - 00:38]
from its application. The speaker for this program is L. Carrington
[00:38 - 00:43]
Goodrich research professor in Chinese history at Columbia University.
[00:43 - 00:49]
His topic is some of China's contributions to world culture.
[00:49 - 00:54]
Here now is Professor Goodrich a subject which I
[00:54 - 00:58]
have taken and which I want to discuss
[00:58 - 01:03]
with you today. I will only be a part of course of China's
[01:03 - 01:07]
contributions. And the second thing I think I ought to
[01:07 - 01:12]
mention is that it will. Many of the
[01:12 - 01:16]
contributions which I still touch on will perhaps not have covered the entire
[01:16 - 01:21]
world. They would have covered more perhaps the eastern part of Asia rather
[01:21 - 01:26]
than the whole Euro Asiatic continent. The
[01:26 - 01:31]
contributions are coming forward. Not every day
[01:31 - 01:36]
but every two or three years we learn new ones. So
[01:36 - 01:40]
it is an almost inexhaustible supply of wealth
[01:40 - 01:45]
which the European Mediterranean world has drawn
[01:45 - 01:49]
from China. The
[01:49 - 01:56]
map of China as you know shows that it
[01:56 - 02:02]
has a very mountainous topography.
[02:02 - 02:06]
The northern part has some great plains
[02:06 - 02:12]
washed by the Yellow River and the Yellow River as you know
[02:12 - 02:17]
was perhaps the earliest home of the Chinese people the
[02:17 - 02:18]
Chinese.
[02:18 - 02:24]
Finally in the course of this millennia reach down down into
[02:24 - 02:29]
the Yangtze Valley and then gradually spread further and further through the jungle
[02:29 - 02:34]
land of South China until it covered the whole area up
[02:34 - 02:39]
from what we think of as the great wall constituting a
[02:39 - 02:44]
kind of boundary in the north down to find an island and
[02:44 - 02:46]
other places in the south.
[02:46 - 02:51]
The Chinese found it difficult
[02:51 - 02:57]
perhaps as well as people on the other side of the euro Asiatic continent found it difficult
[02:57 - 03:02]
to communicate over perhaps a long period of time except in the most
[03:02 - 03:08]
cursory way. The mountains made it difficult
[03:08 - 03:09]
to travel.
[03:09 - 03:13]
The great waste lands of the Gobi and
[03:13 - 03:17]
Takoma Conn. were difficult to cross
[03:17 - 03:23]
the ocean was privately barred to most people until perhaps
[03:23 - 03:29]
the first millennium B.C. But in due course. One thing after
[03:29 - 03:33]
another did come into China and Chinese goods
[03:33 - 03:38]
and ideas and institutions went the other way. I shall
[03:38 - 03:43]
not deal with a lot of the institutions because I think that's being covered by my
[03:43 - 03:48]
colleagues who have either already spoken or are going to speak in the
[03:48 - 03:49]
next two or three days.
[03:49 - 03:56]
The first item which perhaps is
[03:56 - 04:01]
worth mentioning. Not because of its influence on the rest of the world but
[04:01 - 04:05]
because of its influence on the eastern part of Asia
[04:05 - 04:11]
specifically on Korea Japan and Vietnam.
[04:11 - 04:14]
The characters which you see are ones which
[04:14 - 04:20]
appear on ancient Oracle bones bones
[04:20 - 04:25]
that were taken from these sceptically
[04:25 - 04:30]
of animals such as the deer or the ox.
[04:30 - 04:35]
They were also taken for divination purposes
[04:35 - 04:40]
from tortoise shells from the scapular tortoises. We
[04:40 - 04:45]
find ancient characters also bronzes in fact on any hard
[04:45 - 04:49]
surface that would resist the ravages of time.
[04:49 - 04:54]
Whatever was written on wood or similar perishable services have
[04:54 - 04:59]
practically all disappeared one or two characters have been found on forestland. But
[04:59 - 05:03]
these represent writing that was known
[05:03 - 05:08]
around somewhere perhaps between fifteen hundred BCE
[05:08 - 05:12]
and the year 1000. The
[05:12 - 05:18]
characters have many of them a pictographic nature.
[05:18 - 05:22]
If you look at the numerical system you will see that the
[05:22 - 05:28]
there is a general easy trance
[05:28 - 05:35]
mission from one to two to three to four and then there's the shift five
[05:35 - 05:38]
six six seven eight nine ten.
[05:38 - 05:43]
I think it's fairly easy to understand. Five is more difficult and I
[05:43 - 05:48]
don't know that anybody has ever explained that. But in combination with
[05:48 - 05:52]
others they could easily make out the first moon the second moon the third moon the fourth
[05:52 - 05:57]
moon and so on down to the tenth moon and then for the eleventh moon.
[05:57 - 06:02]
As you see 11 would be 10 on top of the
[06:02 - 06:07]
1 but twelfth Moon 2 on top of
[06:07 - 06:12]
a 10 or vice a versa. Ten on top of it too.
[06:12 - 06:17]
The numbers could be elevated right through
[06:17 - 06:23]
to the word 10000 which seems to represent a scorpion
[06:23 - 06:27]
scorpion or at least some sort of an insect with a great many legs.
[06:27 - 06:31]
And this may have been a character chosen for its phonetic
[06:31 - 06:36]
purposes. Here is an indication of how these
[06:36 - 06:41]
characters have been gradually transformed over a period of some three
[06:41 - 06:46]
thousand years. You have a rather naturalistic design
[06:46 - 06:51]
of a fish and then as you come down through the millennia to
[06:51 - 06:55]
the time of Christ or the Han Dynasty on down through the tang
[06:55 - 07:00]
and the song and the Ming Dynasty to modern times you get something
[07:00 - 07:05]
that doesn't look like a fish at all but through our knowledge of
[07:05 - 07:10]
these very ancient characters and many of the characters that have been found in between we
[07:10 - 07:15]
know the way that these were developed.
[07:15 - 07:20]
I was interested in a piece in The New York Times a week or two ago in which it mentioned
[07:20 - 07:25]
the fact that Japanese who have studied their children
[07:25 - 07:30]
have found that the study of the Chinese character which
[07:30 - 07:35]
the Japanese took over as did the Koreans. The study of the Chinese character
[07:35 - 07:40]
along with their other forms of writing has made it possible for them
[07:40 - 07:45]
to speed up their acquisition of
[07:45 - 07:51]
written the written language faster than the English speaking world can do.
[07:51 - 07:55]
And the professor who has written this piece of research has argued that possibly
[07:55 - 08:01]
this pictographic type of writing has something which the
[08:01 - 08:05]
alphabetic does not. The alphabetic after all may have made
[08:05 - 08:11]
the European languages very divisive.
[08:11 - 08:16]
The very fact that we can spell out things in Russian or in
[08:16 - 08:21]
Spanish or in French or in the Swedish
[08:21 - 08:26]
may have been a hindrance to the building up of a one great European culture
[08:26 - 08:29]
rather than something comparable to what the Chinese have done.
[08:29 - 08:35]
Bill it is the first
[08:35 - 08:42]
cultivated plant which is known so far as we can
[08:42 - 08:47]
tell from literate literature or and also from the
[08:47 - 08:53]
archaeological discoveries of the last several decades. Millet
[08:53 - 08:58]
is a very important plant and it is spread all over certain
[08:58 - 09:03]
any Euro Asiatic world whether it actually began in China or not
[09:03 - 09:09]
perhaps it's hard to say but certainly it's been known there for 4000 years.
[09:09 - 09:14]
The view of the millet because I think it's
[09:14 - 09:19]
something that we must remember that the Chinese have been constantly contributing
[09:19 - 09:24]
as they himself have received contributions in the
[09:24 - 09:29]
field of agriculture several years ago.
[09:29 - 09:33]
937 to be specific. I was in Leningrad and I
[09:33 - 09:38]
visited the professor of Chinese at the University of Leningrad and
[09:38 - 09:43]
he said what would you like to do tonight. After we had various other
[09:43 - 09:48]
affairs on our minds and I said I'd like to hear so-and-so
[09:48 - 09:52]
lecture this evening I understand that he's going to talk on
[09:52 - 09:58]
a subject dear to his heart having to do with his own experiments
[09:58 - 10:03]
on. The origin of food plants where we
[10:03 - 10:08]
went and after the lecture was over he said where are you headed for. And I
[10:08 - 10:13]
said I'm headed for China I was going cross Siberia. And he said Oh if I could
[10:13 - 10:18]
only go to China China is the center of one third of the cultivated plants of the
[10:18 - 10:22]
world. And it's not only cultivated plants but also plants such as
[10:22 - 10:26]
flowers and bushes. Many of those that we have here on are used in
[10:26 - 10:31]
seaboard came originally from China.
[10:31 - 10:36]
The shun is a musical instrument also with the ancient
[10:36 - 10:39]
history and it's an important instrument because
[10:39 - 10:46]
not only is it popular to the Chinese and
[10:46 - 10:50]
not only to the Chinese but the people all over the eastern Asiatic
[10:50 - 10:55]
world. My wife and I several years ago were in Burma
[10:55 - 11:00]
and Bangkok and we found in those places in their museums many
[11:00 - 11:05]
examples of the shown now in the
[11:05 - 11:09]
18th century a Russian. Musician
[11:09 - 11:15]
first discovered the show and worked on it
[11:15 - 11:20]
and his ideas were transferred to another man in
[11:20 - 11:24]
Germany and finally to Paris and by the early 1900s
[11:24 - 11:30]
the several instruments were born. The harmonica and
[11:30 - 11:34]
finally the American pipe organ all based on the same
[11:34 - 11:38]
basic idea of the show.
[11:38 - 11:42]
And in this piece of sculpture we you will see
[11:42 - 11:48]
an example of it shown and other instruments the harp
[11:48 - 11:54]
which comes from outside the flute.
[11:54 - 11:58]
And I think over here you will see an example of the show.
[11:58 - 12:05]
Now other items of interest is the work on
[12:05 - 12:09]
bells. Here is a bell which was
[12:09 - 12:15]
produced in the Sean Dynasty period from about fourteen hundred
[12:15 - 12:20]
BCE down to eleven hundred B.C. and
[12:20 - 12:25]
they were used in their temple worship possibly also in the palaces.
[12:25 - 12:30]
And in recent years the Chinese have found a whole
[12:30 - 12:34]
clusters of bells which seem to have been graduated
[12:34 - 12:40]
from I don't know whether it was one part of the OC Dave to the other or what.
[12:40 - 12:44]
But it's very interesting to notice that when these are played
[12:44 - 12:50]
and when they're carefully examined they seem to show no hint of
[12:50 - 12:54]
any chipping away to bring them into tune with the
[12:54 - 12:59]
next in line. Now this kind of thing this
[12:59 - 13:04]
exact tuning of a bell doesn't seem to have taken place in England shall we say
[13:04 - 13:09]
until two thousand years later perhaps around the eleventh century or
[13:09 - 13:14]
so. As you all know so is
[13:14 - 13:19]
perhaps one of the two or three best known of China's contributions
[13:19 - 13:24]
to the rest of the world. Its age is
[13:24 - 13:29]
also lost in time. Silt has been found in the song
[13:29 - 13:33]
dynasties sites of the 14th and 13th century B.C.
[13:33 - 13:39]
they must be the knowledge of silk must go back much earlier. There are legends
[13:39 - 13:43]
and myths about the Celts which
[13:43 - 13:48]
are known to every boy and girl in China at least in the older
[13:48 - 13:50]
days.
[13:50 - 13:54]
Here's a piece of silk which shows a woman
[13:54 - 14:00]
and some sort of fantastic bird.
[14:00 - 14:05]
This is perhaps the oldest painting that is yet to be found in China except
[14:05 - 14:10]
little sketches found on pieces of pottery of the
[14:10 - 14:15]
period of say one thousand or eleven hundred B.C.. This dates from period
[14:15 - 14:20]
about fourth century before our era and I
[14:20 - 14:24]
think you will admit that the very
[14:24 - 14:30]
slight delineation of the garb of the woman
[14:30 - 14:36]
is an example of rather extraordinary skill at a period
[14:36 - 14:38]
of two thousand four hundred years ago.
[14:38 - 14:45]
Now the chopstick is not something that I think one ordinarily thinks of as a
[14:45 - 14:50]
as a real contribution but I think if you have lived in different
[14:50 - 14:55]
parts of the world you will appreciate that the use
[14:55 - 15:00]
of. A utensil of this sort rather than eating with one's
[15:00 - 15:05]
hands is an achievement.
[15:05 - 15:08]
I just enjoyed a curry dinner
[15:08 - 15:12]
and I like Indian food.
[15:12 - 15:16]
And we lived for a year in India. But I must confess that I didn't care to
[15:16 - 15:21]
eat with my hands and so my experience with China
[15:21 - 15:26]
having a pair of chopsticks always at hand is has
[15:26 - 15:32]
proved to me that this is a really a great instrument.
[15:32 - 15:37]
It's an instrument that's useful not only for people at table but very much so in the
[15:37 - 15:41]
kitchen as well. Handling hot things and cooking
[15:41 - 15:46]
utensils. The
[15:46 - 15:51]
Chinese like every other people fought with knives
[15:51 - 15:56]
fought with spears with how birds
[15:56 - 16:02]
with bows and arrows. Many of these things have been found and they have a
[16:02 - 16:06]
wide distribution way across Asia. The
[16:06 - 16:11]
crossbow is something which the Chinese seem to have been uniquely responsible
[16:11 - 16:15]
for. This is an example of one that is
[16:15 - 16:20]
now in one of the museums in Paris. Another one like it has been found in Korea
[16:20 - 16:25]
and it belongs I think to the Japanese. The
[16:25 - 16:30]
crossbow was a great instrument for the Chinese in defending themselves and
[16:30 - 16:34]
attacking their enemies beginning it also around the fourth and third centuries
[16:34 - 16:35]
before our era.
[16:35 - 16:41]
The crossbow lock an example of which you see is
[16:41 - 16:47]
a rather unusual mechanism and the reason why perhaps the
[16:47 - 16:52]
Romans and other contemporary people didn't pick it up was because they didn't understand the
[16:52 - 16:57]
mechanism of the lock. And of the trigger.
[16:57 - 17:02]
We know however that it must've been used widely over
[17:02 - 17:07]
Asia in the second and first centuries BCE when the Chinese were
[17:07 - 17:12]
making their great marches across the talk from the Khan desert over the pommy
[17:12 - 17:16]
years and into the region we call Afghanistan and Iran
[17:16 - 17:21]
because one was found not long ago in in
[17:21 - 17:26]
the region now known as Pakistan and it's in the museum in one of the
[17:26 - 17:29]
museums in that country.

The.
[17:30 - 17:37]
Another thing that I think the Chinese are well known for is lacquer lacquer
[17:37 - 17:42]
is something that they must have experimented experimented with from the sap of
[17:42 - 17:47]
the treat and found that by surfacing that
[17:47 - 17:51]
certain pieces of wood with it they could
[17:51 - 17:56]
also apply paintings to the surface. This
[17:56 - 18:01]
dates as well from the third century or so before our era.
[18:01 - 18:06]
And it gives us a picture too of certain scenes
[18:06 - 18:11]
showing that painting was done not only on Ansel but on
[18:11 - 18:15]
lacquer and doubtless on other subjects and other materials which have perished
[18:15 - 18:21]
in a dish from the Han Dynasty Rup the second and for
[18:21 - 18:25]
centuries before our era up there countless numbers
[18:25 - 18:31]
of these examples of Chinas skill
[18:31 - 18:36]
with Lacker the Russians found
[18:36 - 18:41]
in a tomb up near a woman Baltar used to be called know and will ah.
[18:41 - 18:46]
About 1014 a dish with some characters on it
[18:46 - 18:52]
and the Japanese almost at the same time found another dish
[18:52 - 18:57]
in a tomb in Northern Korea where the Chinese had been
[18:57 - 19:02]
for three centuries beginning around one hundred eight B.C. and lasting
[19:02 - 19:07]
on down to 3rd century A.D. and when notes were
[19:07 - 19:12]
compared to the script that was on one of these dishes and on
[19:12 - 19:17]
the other they found that one was dated to be C and the other was dated
[19:17 - 19:22]
for a date and the names of the makers on it borked at
[19:22 - 19:27]
least the names of two of the same people and came from the far distant province of
[19:27 - 19:31]
Sichuan way in west China. So lacquer made its
[19:31 - 19:36]
way into Mongolia and right across into
[19:36 - 19:40]
Afghanistan and into the Syria region which the Russians have been
[19:40 - 19:44]
excavating with such skill over the last decade or more.
[19:44 - 19:51]
Football is something you wouldn't expect I think. Here is a stone
[19:51 - 19:58]
which shows two rather what shall I
[19:58 - 20:04]
say secondary figures and another was really having a ball.
[20:04 - 20:09]
The game of football apparently developed. We're not certain of this
[20:09 - 20:14]
but it the first mention as in connection with military activity
[20:14 - 20:20]
the soldiers were taught how to play and this was one form of
[20:20 - 20:25]
their exercise. The story goes that a
[20:25 - 20:30]
certain Chinese general by the name of what your being who died in a hundred seventeen
[20:30 - 20:35]
B.C. found himself in the desert on a way to
[20:35 - 20:39]
attack the ship or the hunted peoples in the northwest
[20:39 - 20:44]
and the. There was a lack of food. I think perhaps a
[20:44 - 20:49]
lack of other things and the same for a while as all the soldiers were going to
[20:49 - 20:52]
mutiny. So he got some of his.
[20:52 - 20:59]
Confidence together and ask them to hew out a football field in the area
[20:59 - 21:04]
and put a ball in the midst of the soldiers and tell them to go ahead and
[21:04 - 21:09]
play. This apparently destroyed the beauty and spirit of the soldiers
[21:09 - 21:14]
that day it's as I say for around one hundred twenty B.C. The
[21:14 - 21:19]
game continued. Here you find it in a very polite form the Emperor's
[21:19 - 21:24]
Sharan zone who reigned in the eighth century of our era
[21:24 - 21:28]
seems to be having a time with some of his courtiers.
[21:28 - 21:36]
The most unlikely part of the palace porch.
[21:36 - 21:41]
Another one of the great contributions of the Chinese to the
[21:41 - 21:47]
foodstuffs of the world and not only food stuffs but also to the making of
[21:47 - 21:51]
carburetors and Lord knows what is the soybean.
[21:51 - 21:57]
I think that Benjamin Franklin is credited with having learned about the
[21:57 - 22:02]
soybean when he was our minister in Paris and sent samples of
[22:02 - 22:07]
it to this country but it didn't catch on a tall. It wasn't until Mr.
[22:07 - 22:12]
Henry Ford saw some uses of it that it was transported
[22:12 - 22:16]
to this country in great quantities and planted in our fields.
[22:16 - 22:21]
And now one of the things that strikes my family every so often is
[22:21 - 22:26]
the announcement over the radio that wheat is sell and sell and
[22:26 - 22:31]
soybeans are mixed or something of the sort. It's become an important part of the
[22:31 - 22:33]
stock market jargon.
[22:33 - 22:37]
You heard L. Carrington Goodrich research professor in Chinese history at Columbia
[22:37 - 22:42]
University as he spoke on the topic. Some of China's contributions to
[22:42 - 22:47]
world culture. Professor Goodrich spoke at the annual conference of the
